淘宝 (Taobao)
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
淘宝 (Taobao, literally "searching for treasure") is a Chinese marketplace, part of Alibaba Group. Unlike Tmall, where brands and official representatives trade, Taobao has historically gathered sellers of every size, including private individuals.
The platform's own description in the markup of its home page: “淘宝网 is Asia's largest online trading platform, offering clothing, cosmetics, household goods, digital electronics, account top-ups… hundreds of millions of quality goods, plus guaranteed transactions (receive the goods first, pay afterwards) and consumer guarantees from sellers — a promise of returns, an extra shipment if goods are damaged”. This is the platform's claim about itself, with no date and no indication of how "largest" was counted.
Who's here
The parent company discloses only indirect indicators to investors.
From Alibaba Group's report for the quarter ended 31 March 2026: the number of 88VIP members — "the consumer group with the highest spending" — continued to grow at double-digit rates and exceeded 62 million. 88VIP is a paid loyalty programme, not the platform's entire audience: it is the top segment of buyers, and total traffic cannot be reconstructed from it.
The interface language is Chinese: the home page is served declaring zh-CN. The privacy policy confirms that the platform distinguishes between users inside and outside China: “if you use Taobao products or services outside China, click to view the ‘Privacy Policy for Taobao Basic Functions (overseas version)’”.
Getting started
Registration is described in the privacy policy: to create a Taobao account you must supply at least a mobile phone number, a desired username and a password; if you refuse, no account can be created — only browsing and search remain. The platform assigns the account a level under its own calculation rules and grants the basic rights corresponding to that level.
For the seller role, identification is mandatory. The document names the grounds directly: confirmation of real name or identity is required for transactions in special types of goods and services, for obtaining member roles with additional identity verification requirements, and wherever the law requires verification of a user's real identity — including protection of minors' rights, combating telecommunications and network fraud, income tax withholding, administrative enforcement and judicial proceedings. To be verified you must supply genuine identification data yourself — name, document number or facial recognition data — and permit cross-checking through state authentication bodies or the retrieval of information from a linked Alipay account.
The practical conclusion: a seller's storefront on Taobao opens only after linking a Chinese phone number, an identity document and Alipay's payment infrastructure. That makes entry for a non-resident fundamentally different from Poshmark or Vinted.
What you can publish
The requirements for a product listing, restrictions on images and descriptions, and the list of prohibited categories are contained in the rules on rule.taobao.com.
The privacy policy shows which objects exist on the platform at all. A user can add to favourites, subscribe, follow, share and "like" products, shops, sections, live-stream rooms, content and its authors. So Taobao has shops, live streams and authored content as a separate entity — this is not merely a product catalogue.
Search supports non-text queries: when you use search, including image search and voice search, the platform requests access to the microphone, the camera or the uploaded image.
How to grow
Taobao is one of the few platforms in the registry where the recommendation mechanics are described by the company itself, even if inside a document about personal data.
To display and recommend products, the platform collects a history of views, searches, cart additions and purchases, joins it with device information and service logs, and uses algorithmic models to predict attributes of a user's preferences. On the basis of those attributes it shows advertising and other material — both within Taobao itself and in third-party apps and on third-party devices. Mentioned separately are ranking-style selections formed by "sorting and selection algorithms" on the basis of statistical analysis of popularity and trends.
A detail that matters to a seller: the results are not only personalised but deliberately diversified. The platform states that it introduces recommendation diversification technologies into the ranking process in order to broaden the reach of material and avoid excessive concentration of similar content.
A user can switch personalisation off, and that is worth taking into account when assessing organic reach: search results carry a “去个性化排序” (“remove personalised sorting”) setting, and control over personalised advertising and recommendations sits in "My Taobao → Settings → Privacy Settings".
Path to monetization
Taobao is a marketplace, not a media platform: it does not pay authors as such, and a seller's income is revenue less payments to the platform.
Commission rates, deposit amounts and paid-promotion prices are published in the rules on rule.taobao.com and in the seller dashboard.
What is visible from the parent company's reporting is how the platform's income works overall. The main line is called customer management revenue and combines seller payments for promotion and services. For the quarter ended 31 March 2026, it grew 1% year on year, and 8% excluding the contra-revenue from the new business development programme.
The mechanics of that programme bear directly on sellers: the company states that during the quarter it expanded the business development programme for selected sellers, under which the size of the platform's subsidies is directly linked to their marketing spend; for accounting purposes such subsidies, previously recorded as sales and marketing expenses, are now recorded as a reduction of customer management revenue. Put simply: the more a seller spends on promotion inside the platform, the more subsidy comes back. This is the key to understanding Taobao's economics — the platform's income is tied not to the transaction commission as such but to sellers' marketing budgets.
Separately, the company reports that it embedded the Taobao and Tmall e-commerce service into the Qwen app, launched the Qwen Shopping Assistant AI helper in the Taobao app, and released the Wukong AI agent for sellers.
Tools and automation
Taobao has an official developer platform — 淘宝开放平台 (Taobao Open Platform). The portal opens, but its contents — the catalogue of methods, the conditions for obtaining keys, the rules for applications — are loaded by script and cannot be read without a browser.
Of the built-in tools named in the privacy policy: "My Taobao" with the sections "Favourites", "Shop subscriptions", "History" and "Followed", where a user manages their own actions, and the AI agent for sellers mentioned above.
Limits and rules
The platform's rules for sellers — shop requirements, deposits, penalties, the dispute resolution procedure — are published on rule.taobao.com.
What the privacy policy does record:
- Registration. Only by mobile phone number; without one, only browsing and search are available.
- Real name. Required for special product categories, certain member roles and where the law demands it.
- Cross-border orders. In a cross-border transaction the buyer must supply identity document data in order to clear customs.
- Phone number checks. The platform verifies the risk level of a linked number with the telecom operator and passes on the number and the linking date to check for reassignment.
- Different documents for different countries. A separate overseas version of the policy applies to use outside China.
Who it's for
Suits sellers operating inside China who have a Chinese phone number, an identity document and Alipay: without that set, an account with full rights cannot be created. Suits those ready to invest in promotion: the platform's economics are arranged so that the platform's subsidies are tied to a seller's marketing spend.
Does not suit a quick start from abroad: identification, the interface language and a separate overseas version of the rules make entry a project rather than an action. Nor does it suit anyone who needs to estimate costs in advance: the rules and prices are unavailable without signing in.
Tools for this platform
The list is built from the tools' own facts: every line is a tool's statement that it supports the platform, with the source named. A tool missing from the list only means we have no such statement.
