Stocktwits
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
Stocktwits is a social network where discussion is organised around tickers. Every post is tagged with a "cashtag" — the symbol of an exchange instrument with a dollar sign — and lands in that instrument's stream. It works just like a hashtag, only strictly tied to a security, an ETF or a cryptocurrency.
One caveat is required in this article right away: we go through how the platform is built and what its rules are, touching on neither markets nor instruments. There are no recommendations to buy or sell here and there cannot be. The platform itself takes the same position and repeats it in the footer of every help page: «Stocktwits is not a broker-dealer, investment adviser or any other financial professional; no content on the platform should be regarded as an offer, a solicitation or advice to buy or sell securities».
For a marketer the platform is interesting for two things: it has measurable attention metrics for each symbol, and unusually strict rules against promotion. The second matters more than the first — much of what counts as normal SMM practice on other platforms is named outright as spam here.
A caveat about availability: the main domain stocktwits.com returns 403 with a browser check on ordinary requests, so the whole article rests on the open help centre at help.stocktwits.com.
Who's here
The platform publishes no audience figures on the pages available to us. There is no MAU, no number of registered accounts and no breakdown by country in the help centre, and the "About Us" page leads to a domain closed to us. We give no estimates at all.
What can be said from indirect signs. The access levels are described directly: features are separated between guests, registered users and Edge subscribers, meaning some content is visible without registration. Verification is addressed to specific groups: «verified accounts (with a yellow or blue check) are reserved for influential authors, professionals and recognisable brands» — this is the only official confirmation that companies are present on the platform legitimately. One more structural fact: the platform has a separate help article "Why Stocktwits does not support OTC stocks", so over-the-counter securities are out of scope. The interface and help language is English.
Getting started
Registration is free. The mandatory step after it is confirming your email: «you must confirm your email address before posting». The help section also explains the other reasons a post will not appear in the stream: the account is suspended or blocked, or the community rules have been broken. The starting set of actions is described in four articles of the "Getting Started" section: registration, setting up a profile, building a watchlist, following leading authors.
There is no separate business account with document checks. For a brand there is one path: an ordinary account plus an application for verification, and the application process is described minimally — to find out whether you are eligible for verification you have to contact support by email. The help section does not disclose the criteria for "influence" and "recognisability".
What you can publish
A post is created in the field "Share an idea (use $ before ticker: eg $AAPL)". What a post consists of: a cashtag — mandatory; optional Bullish or Bearish labels, a price forecast tool, up to 4 images or charts of no more than 5 MB each, GIFs via Giphy. Once published, the post appears in the stream of the corresponding ticker and in your profile.
The length of an ordinary post is not named in the help section. Only the ceiling for the paid subscription is known: long posts of up to 10,000 characters are a Stocktwits Edge feature.
The prohibitions are set out in the "Best Practices" article as "house rules with zero tolerance". The second point is critical for marketing and is worth quoting in detail. The platform allows sharing useful material, but: «we ask that you do not promote or send links that are advertisements for your own service; you may not send links to subscriber-only content that requires signing in or registering, paid or free». It then lists what exactly counts as spam: a link to a landing page or a commercial offer instead of the promised material; unsolicited replies, mentions and direct messages promoting a paid service or product; a post with a link only loosely related to the ticker; repeated publication of identical or very similar messages; reports of profit on trades that you did not originally post on Stocktwits; mass following in the hope of follow-backs; likes for the sake of gaining followers.
How to grow
The mechanics of distribution are described without mystery: growth comes from correct tagging, not from algorithmic tricks. The platform's own recommendations: put in $TICKER so the message lands in the right stream and spreads across feeds; use a reply or @username for personal conversations and do not tag side conversations with tickers; curate other people's good content; credit authorship with "via @username"; tag strong authors; answer questions.
Of its built-in analytics the platform publicly describes two metrics. Watchers — the number of users who have added a symbol to their watchlist; unlike message volume, it reflects a longer-lived interest. The platform warns about the limits of interpretation: the figure does not say whether investors are optimistic or pessimistic — it only measures how many people have decided to follow a symbol. Sentiment — an aggregate figure that takes into account labels, likes, replies and overall message activity and gives priority to recent activity, reflecting the current conversation rather than historical averages. The platform draws the limit of its use itself: «like any market indicator, Sentiment is not intended to predict future price movement». For someone watching a brand it is useful in a different way: both metrics show the dynamics of attention to a symbol, and both are available in basic form for free, while full historical charts are for Edge subscribers only.
No advertising cabinet is described on the available pages. Indirect confirmation that there is advertising on the platform comes from the make-up of the paid subscription, among whose benefits is the absence of advertising.
Path to monetization
The platform does not pay authors. There is no revenue-sharing programme, no payout thresholds and no creator fund in the help centre, and money here moves the other way — from the user to the platform.
The paid product is called Stocktwits Edge. It includes: real-time retail sentiment overlays, full trend lists beyond the top ten, no advertising, extended search filters, long posts of up to 10,000 characters. The help section does not name the price and refers you to the subscriptions page on the main domain, which is closed to us.
The only way to extract value for a business is reputational: a verified brand account and quality posts that do not break the ban on promotion. Selling services directly through posts and direct messages is forbidden on this platform.
Tools and automation
Automation here is a subject with a minus sign. The rule is formulated without reservations: accounts with signs of automation — copy-paste spam, mass posting, scripted behaviour — are banned permanently. Setting up scheduling into ticker streams means risking the account.
The platform does have official programmatic access: the home page links to a developer section at api.stocktwits.com. The page https://api.stocktwits.com/developers itself returns 403 with a browser check. The separate domains of the paid data stream — firehose.stocktwits.com and firestream-portal.stocktwits.com — returned 503 and 403 respectively.
The standard administration tools are simple and described in the help section: blocking is two-way — once you block someone, you stop seeing their posts and they stop seeing yours, and the chain report → confirm → block, which triggers a moderation review. The platform states that it uses both algorithms and live moderators.
Limits and rules
- Posting and media. You cannot post without a confirmed email; up to 4 images, no more than 5 MB each; 10,000 characters only with an Edge subscription, and the limit for an ordinary post is not stated in the help section.
- Promotion and automation. Advertising links to your own service, links behind registration or paid access, unsolicited replies and direct messages with promotion are spam; links to Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram and other external groups are forbidden; signs of automation lead to a permanent ban.
- Sanctions. Suspension follows a breach of the House Rules or the terms of use; appeals go by email to support.
- Instruments. The platform does not support over-the-counter (OTC) securities.
- Legal framework. The operator is StockTwits, Inc.; the footer of the help section carries a disclaimer that the company is not a broker-dealer or an investment adviser, while market data is supplied by Xignite and BATS BZX, call data by Quartr and crypto data by Coingecko.
Who it's for
It suits companies and media outlets in finance that need a verified account and a presence in the streams for their own symbols. For a public company it makes sense at the very least to watch the stream of its own ticker: Watchers and Sentiment give measurable dynamics of retail investors' attention to the security.
It suits authors ready to work in the genre of "a useful post with no link back to yourself": the platform explicitly encourages curation, crediting authorship and answering questions.
It does not suit lead generation: almost every familiar technique — a link to a landing page, an invitation to a Telegram channel, a direct-message campaign, a post about returns — falls under the definition of spam, with escalation up to a permanent ban. It does not suit scheduling: signs of automation lead to a permanent ban. It does not suit those who need monetization from the platform: there is none.

The list is built from the tools' own facts: every line is a tool's statement that it supports the platform, with the source named. A tool missing from the list only means we have no such statement.
