Lotus
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
Lotus is a Vietnamese social network. Its own description in the site's markup is short: “Lotus — Mạng xã hội của người Việt”, that is, “Lotus — the social network of the Vietnamese”. The operator is given in the footer: Công ty cổ phần Mạng xã hội VIVA — the VIVA Social Network joint-stock company; in the App Store the publisher is named in English as VIVA SOCIAL NETWORK JOINT STOCK COMPANY. The same operator runs a separate messenger, Lotus Chat, with its own site, terms and prices; the two should not be confused.
The platform's main feature for a practitioner is that it is mobile in the strict sense. The web version says so about itself: “Website vẫn đang phát triển” — “the site is still under development”. Registering through a browser is impossible: the page states outright that to register a personal account you need to download and open the Lotus app.
Who's here
The platform publishes no audience figures: no number of users, no country breakdown, no traffic data.
The only measurable quantity belongs to Apple. According to App Store data obtained through the public iTunes interface, on our check date the app had 4,847 ratings at an average of 3.22, a 17+ rating, a first publication of 30 June 2019 and a latest version 8.6.6 of 24 June 2023. These are store ratings, not users. The update date deserves attention: the iOS version has not changed since June 2023, even though the site serves fresh posts and the same operator's messenger is being updated — the latest item in the Lotus Chat news is dated 2 July.
The language of the platform is Vietnamese. The App Store listing names 23 language codes, including Vietnamese, English, Russian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean; this is the app's declared localization, not the languages of the audience.
Getting started
The procedure is rigidly tied to the app. The web sign-in page offers three routes and all three begin with the app installed: signing in with a QR code through the Lotus app, signing in with a one-time code shown in the app, and a code sent by message.
The sections reachable from the web navigation: the home page, “Xu hướng” (trends), “Nhóm” (groups), Lotus Portal and “Hỗ trợ” (support). The link to Lotus Portal leads to the address lotus.vn/portal, which serves no working page.
A group format exists: a separate page, “Nhóm trên Lotus” — “Groups on Lotus” — opens, but its contents are served only after signing in.
What you can publish
The platform lists its set of formats in the app description in the App Store: a Photo status post, blogs, quotes and notes through Rich Media, its own set of reactions, “challenges”, a news feed from more than 50 leading outlets, a Trending news section and the Lotus Shopping format for buying and selling with direct interaction with the seller. This is the developer's text, relating to the 2023 version.
Among the mechanics visible directly in the site's markup: “Retus” — a repost of someone else's post, “Loan tin” — spreading a news item, and embed codes for publishing on an external site.
How to grow
What is visible from the markup is a built-in internal currency mechanic. The dialogue for rewarding a post spells out the arithmetic directly: one “star” costs 20 tokens plus 2 burned, 22 tokens in total. This is the only numeric parameter of the internal economy available without signing in.
The second growth mechanism is editorial: the app promises a feed from more than 50 leading outlets and a Trending news section, and the web version serves a trends page, “Lotus Xu hướng — news and events from the official press”. A significant share of the attention inside the platform goes to editorial content rather than to participants' posts.
Path to monetization
The only money mechanic visible without signing in is rewarding a post with “stars” for tokens, and the platform gives no public rules for cashing that out.
Formally there is a trading mechanic in the app: the App Store description promises Lotus Shopping — a format in which you can interact with a seller directly and save the goods that interest you.
Separately, there is a paid product from the same operator, but not from this platform. For the Lotus Chat messenger there is an open price list for bots: a free trial plan — up to 5,000 messages and up to 5 messages per second; the Standard package (up to 10 messages per second) — from 10,000 dong for 20,000 messages a month to 1,600,000 dong for 10,000,000; the Premium package (up to 30 messages per second) — from 20,000 to 3,200,000 dong. Payment goes through the VNPay gateway, with a 50% discount for the first month. The operator itself states the trial period differently in two places: 15 days in the table and up to 30 days in the FAQ on the same page. This is a business's spending on automation, not an author's income.
Tools and automation
The only thing the platform offers for external use is codes for embedding a post on a third-party site.
For the same operator's messenger, by contrast, the programmatic side is described. Lotus Chat Bot is presented as a SaaS module compatible with any Telegram SDK: it lets you deploy bots with functions, behaviour and an API analogous to a Telegram Bot, and includes a web control panel, interaction analytics and billing. The operator describes the quota system in detail: warnings at 80%, 90% and 95% of the quota used, suspension at 100%, automatic renewal if the balance is sufficient, reminder emails 7, 3, 2 and 1 day in advance, and a downgrade of the plan with 7 days' notice and without a refund.
Limits and rules
A user agreement and content rules for the Lotus social network are not openly posted: the site's navigation has no links to them, and the usual addresses such as lotus.vn/w/dieu-khoan.htm return an error page reading “Xin lỗi, trang bạn đang tìm kiếm không tồn tại!” — “Sorry, the page you are looking for does not exist”.
What is known about the legal frame comes from a document for an adjacent product from the same operator. The Lotus Chat Bot terms require compliance with Vietnamese law and list it directly: the 2018 Cybersecurity Law, decrees 53/2022/NĐ-CP and 147/2024/NĐ-CP on the management of the internet and of information online, 13/2023/NĐ-CP on personal data protection, and the 2005 Intellectual Property Law. The same document carries a requirement useful to anyone automating communication: a bot is a program, not a person, and the user of the service is obliged to label this explicitly.
Licensing: Vietnamese social networks operate under a permit from the relevant agency, and the register is kept by the Authority of Broadcasting, Television and Electronic Information, which points to a system for searching permit records.
Who it's for
Lotus is worth considering only when working with a Vietnamese audience and only if you are prepared to run everything from a mobile app: registration is impossible without it, and the web version calls itself unfinished.
For a company the platform is currently poorly suited: with no brand page, no ad manager, no rules for commercial activity, no programmatic interface and no statistics, there is nothing on which to plan a campaign with a measurable result.
The platform offers an author no public payout programme: there are only internal “stars” for tokens, whose mechanics are not described openly.
If your task is automated communication with a Vietnamese audience and the Telegram bot model suits you, it makes more sense to look not at the social network itself but at the same operator's messenger: there you get an open price list, documentation and comprehensible rules.
