Josh
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
Josh (जोश — "zest", "verve" in Hindi) is an Indian app by the company VerSe Innovation that began as a platform for short vertical video in Indian languages. By the date of our check the product had shifted towards paid communication: in the stores the app is called «Josh — Live Calls & Chat», and its description opens with the words «Josh — your all-in-one platform for private calls, chat, short videos and audio stories».
The platform's website, meanwhile, has stayed as it was: «Josh is made in India for the creators of Bharat; watch fresh videos from your favourite creators, record and upload your own, take part in challenges and become a star» — and has not been updated: the copyright notice on it is dated 2020.
The key roles in the new construction are the "user" and the "host". The rules define a host as «a user of the platform who interacts with other users through chat, audio calls or streams»; it is the host who earns.
Who's here
The platform gave a figure of its own in its transparency report: «Josh is India's leading short-video app, with 163 million users who create and consume content in their own local language». The report covers the period from 1 January to 30 September 2022 and was published on 7 November 2022 — that is, the figure was claimed by the platform itself almost four years ago and has not been publicly updated by it since.
In its community guidelines, updated in November 2023, the platform frames its scale differently: «the conversations that take place on the platform reflect the diversity of a community of more than one billion people». That is an estimate not of the app's audience but of the community in the broad sense, and it cannot be compared with the previous figure.
External measurements come from the stores. As of the check date Google Play showed a rating of 3.7, 9.83 lakh reviews (983 thousand), more than 10 crore downloads (more than 100 million) and a USK 12+ age mark. The App Store — version 11.3.0, released on 14 October 2025, an average rating of 4.20 across 9,745 ratings and an age rating of 17+.
Languages. The site lists Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Odia and English, the store description promises «12 Indian languages», and the legal section switches between fourteen languages, including Punjabi, Assamese and Urdu.
Getting started
Josh's age requirement is stricter than that of most platforms in this guide: «use of and access to the platform are available to all persons who can be legally bound by a contract and are at least 18 years of age; if you are a minor, that is, under 18, you must not register or gain access as a user». Google Play, meanwhile, marks the app as 12+ — the discrepancy between the store and the platform's rules is worth bearing in mind.
There is no separate business account. Responsibility for the account rests entirely with the user: «you agree that you are solely responsible for the activity that occurs under your account… keep your password secret and use the account strictly for personal purposes». The platform is entitled to disable an account and delete or block the content you have uploaded at any moment.
The legal entity you enter into a relationship with is named outright: VerSe Innovation Pvt. Ltd., a private company under the laws of India with a registered office in Bangalore, Karnataka.
What you can publish
The formats listed by the platform: «DreamCall — private one-on-one audio calls with hosts; direct messages with sharing of video and stories; audio stories — short fiction broadcasts in the drama, romance and thriller genres; short videos — comedy, dance, DIY; games».
Rights in what you upload
The wording is standard for platforms of this kind, but it is worth reading in full. By posting material you «grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, adapt, modify, distribute, license, sell, transfer, publicly display, publicly perform, transmit, stream, broadcast, access, view and otherwise exploit such user content — only on, through or by means of the platform». The restriction "only on the platform" is significant here: it narrows the licence, yet the right to sell and sublicense is retained all the same.
Separately you grant «a royalty-free licence to use your username, image, voice and likeness in order to identify you as the source of your content». Your material is treated as open at the same time: «any user content will be deemed non-confidential and non-proprietary».
The content rules are published as a separate document and built as an intermediary's document under Indian law: they are issued «in accordance with the provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 together with the rules made under it, including… the Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code Rules, 2021». "Content" there means «text, images, audio, video… as well as comments and hyperlinks».
How to grow
The platform publishes no description of its feed algorithm. Of the growth mechanics named on the open pages there are challenges: the site invites you to «take part in fun challenges and become a star», and the transparency report lists its own themed campaigns with hashtags — #VoteFest on election turnout, #SaveSoil on soil conservation, a Yoga Day challenge.
The second mechanism is becoming a host: the app invites you to «become a broadcaster on Josh and join the fun of live entertainment», promising fame and gifts from fans.
No built-in analytics for authors is described on the pages we checked. We also found no ad dashboard for outside advertisers, although Google Play marks the app as containing ads.
Path to monetization
Josh's economy has two currencies, and the rules describe it in enough detail to understand the mechanics — though without a single rate.
Josh Jems — what viewers buy. The rules define them like this: a programme «through which users can thank their favourite hosts beyond a like or a comment»; Jems are bought only on the platform, and the price is shown at the moment of purchase. They are spent on gift animations on a host's video (a rose, a ring and others, each with its own cost in Jems), access to audio calls and chats with DreamCall hosts, access to audio rooms and streams by DreamCall hosts.
The terms on Jems are harsh: all purchases of Jems and related in-app items are final and non-refundable, except where mandatory rules provide otherwise; on termination of an account for any reason all of the user's Jems automatically expire; in addition, the company is entitled to cancel the Jems in the wallet of a user inactive for 180 days, having given advance notice. And on top of that: the platform is entitled at its own discretion to change any of the terms of Jems — how they are awarded, how they are used, the purchase price, the cancellation period and so on.
Josh Diamonds — what the host receives. When a user sends them to a host, all Jems and animations are automatically converted into Josh Diamonds and reflected in the host's account. Then comes withdrawal — and here the platform names conditions but not figures: a host may exchange accumulated diamonds by requesting a cash payout; the applicable rate is disclosed at the moment of exchange; payouts are subject to applicable taxes, and Josh reserves the right to charge an exchange fee at its sole discretion.
Payout timings are not guaranteed: «although Josh strives to process all withdrawal requests in a timely manner, no guarantee as to timing is given, and no undertaking is made that a withdrawal will be completed within any particular period».
Who pays the money. The most important point for anyone planning to work as a host. Payouts for DreamCall do not come from the platform: withdrawal of diamonds earned on DreamCall services may be handled by a third party engaged by Josh to onboard and manage hosts (the "Agency"), and the host acknowledges that it is the Agency, not Josh, that is solely responsible for identity verification (KYC), for collecting and storing hosts' payment and banking details, and that all payouts of diamonds or their cash equivalent are made exclusively by the Agency.
Separately there are subscriptions: the platform is entitled to charge a subscription or membership fee for services the user selects, with payments going through third-party payment gateways.
Tools and automation
We found no public API for Josh: there is no developer section on the open pages. The site myjosh.in is a one-page showcase with no personal dashboard; the legal documents are moved to a separate subdomain, share.myjosh.in, which is also where the languages switch.
The platform publishes official contact addresses on its site: general enquiries — [email protected]; complaints, including copyright matters — Grievance Officer Mr Nagraj; law enforcement requests — [email protected]. The platform is required to publish monthly data on complaints under the Indian Rules of 2021.
Limits and rules
- Age. 18 and over under the platform's rules against a mark of 12+ on Google Play and 17+ on the App Store.
- Licence in content. Worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, with the right to sublicense — but only within the platform.
- The viewer's currency. Jems are non-refundable; they expire when an account is closed and may be cancelled after 180 days of inactivity.
- The author's currency. The diamond exchange rate is disclosed only at the moment of exchange; the exchange fee is at the platform's discretion; payout timings are not guaranteed.
- Who pays. On DreamCall, payouts and identity verification are handled by a third-party "Agency", not by Josh.
- Law. Indian; the documents are issued under the IT Act of 2000 and the Rules of 2021.
- Data. Google Play states that the app does not share data with third parties, encrypts data in transit and allows a data deletion request.
Who it's for
It suits those ready to work as a host for an Indian audience: paid calls, gifts and streams are what the current product is built around, and the platform describes that role in the most detail.
It suits reach in Indian languages: the official interface and legal-document languages cover more than ten languages, including Odia, Assamese and Urdu.
It does not suit distributing short clips as your main task: short video has remained one feature among several, and the product description and its name in the stores speak of calls and chat.
It does not suit you if predictable income matters: the exchange rate is disclosed only at the moment of exchange, the fee is set at the platform's discretion, payout timings are not guaranteed, and settlements for calls are handled by an outside agency. It does not suit minors: the rules require 18. And it does not suit automation — there is no programmatic access.
