Zenn

Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.

Overview

Zenn is a Japanese platform where engineers publish technical material. The operator is the company Classmethod, as stated in the user agreement and on the page under the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions.

What sets Zenn apart from its neighbours in the niche is not the format but the money. The platform states its purpose this way: so that engineers who share knowledge are rewarded for it. Two mechanisms are built for that: selling your own "books" and paid badges that a reader gives to an author. Both are described in the contract with figures — a rarity for platforms of this type.

There are four entities: articles, books, "scraps" (draft notes) and Publication — team sections. An article must belong to the category Tech (verified in practice) or Idea (careers, management, roundups) — the platform describes the selection rules separately.

Who's here

Zenn discloses no public audience figures. We checked the "About Zenn" page, the media kit and the contents of the questions section — there is no user count, no publication count and no country breakdown there. The media kit contains only logos, screenshots and rules on using the mark.

The language is Japanese: the interface, the agreement and the help are in Japanese, and we found no English-language version of the site. An indirect sign of corporate presence is the Publication section, where the platform showcases implementation deep dives at Japanese companies. This is a selection by the platform itself, not independent research.

Getting started

Registration goes through an external account: the agreement speaks of authentication data of a service managed by someone other than the operator, and the questions section has an item about changing the linked Google account. A separate email is set as a backup for recovering access — an item in the "How to use" section is devoted to this.

The requirements for a user are in article 2 of the agreement: arrange your own internet access, agree to the rules and not to have broken them in the past. There is no age threshold in the version we checked. The operator has the right to refuse registration and is not obliged to explain why.

You can write in the web editor or through a link to a GitHub repository: Zenn CLI, uploading images from a repository and editing via github.dev are described in the "How to use" section.

What you can publish

A book is assembled from chapters; the official guide "How to write a book on Zenn" covers creating a book, chapter order and free chapters, the cover and the price. The price limit is stated plainly: from 0 to 5,000 yen, and some or all chapters can be opened for free.

The prohibitions are listed in article 4 of the agreement. Among them: spam (automatically generated texts and republishing the same thing), accessing paid content while bypassing payment, excessively cruel and explicitly sexual material, religious agitation, and publications whose main purpose is advertising or recruitment.

The community rules soften that last point: advertising is acceptable "to the extent of a pinned message at the end of an article". The same place holds the position on generative models: using them is not prohibited, but you should not publish without checking accuracy, nor churn out articles for the sake of followers and points.

How to grow

The platform does not disclose its feed algorithm. The list of questions has an item "Why is my article not in Trending and how does it work", but the answer page is served by script and cannot be read without a browser.

Something else is stated in plain words — about quality: the recommendation is to include personal experience and analysis rather than a retelling of the official documentation, and not to use clickbait headlines. For books the advice is direct: if you are selling, make some chapters free so the reader understands the content before buying.

There is no ad dashboard for authors: we found neither a self-service page nor a rate card for promoting publications.

Path to monetization

The payout terms are written into the contract rather than into marketing copy — this is Zenn's strong point.

The paid entity is a book. The sale of paid content is a direct transaction between seller and buyer; the operator is not a party to it. The buyer receives not a book but an "access right": rights to copy, quote and adapt are not included in it. A completed transaction cannot be cancelled, except by agreement of the parties outside the site.

The second source is paid badges. The operator sells "digital gifts", and out of the revenue from selling them the author is paid a "placement fee" (掲載料, keisairyō) depending on the amount of badges shown on the publication page.

Fees and payouts

The figures are named twice — in article 12 of the agreement and on the page under the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions — and the values match: the settlement fee is 3.6% of the sale price and the platform fee is 10% of the amount left after the settlement fee is deducted, both including tax. Settlement is handled by Stripe, and the operator does not store payment details itself.

The payout procedure is article 13. The settlement date is the last day of the month; by the 10th of the following month the operator shows the total in the personal dashboard. Then: an application must be submitted within 5 months of the settlement date; if less than 1,000 yen has accumulated, only an Amazon gift card is available; the money arrives within the month following the month of the application, and a withdrawal fee of 350 yen is deducted. If the bank details are wrong, the author bears the bank costs of the return.

Payment by the buyer is by Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club cards. Settlement is in yen, and a payout to an account presupposes a Japanese bank — this is our inference from the payout method, not a statement by the platform.

A paid product for teams

Publication Free gives you linking of members' articles, a shared page and an unlimited number of members (the number of owners is limited); Publication Pro costs 9,980 yen a month or 99,800 yen a year, with the first 30 days free. Pro includes internal review of articles, an analytics panel, up to three advertising banners in articles, pinning publications, a shared GitHub repository, a link to Google Analytics and switching off comments.

Separately, the platform states a position on who the texts belong to: an author who leaves a Publication may leave the articles there or move them to their personal ones — in both cases they remain that author's work.

Tools and automation

We found no public API for Zenn: there is no developer section on the site, and robots.txt closes off only /search. The supported tools are the Zenn CLI and the repository link, both described in the "How to use" section; RSS subscription is there too. The platform keeps the source code of the editor and utilities in an organisation on GitHub, and the change histories of the community rules and the agreement are kept there as well — a rare practice that lets you see what changed and when.

We found no third-party scheduling services with confirmed support for Zenn.

Limits and rules

Who it's for

It suits you if you write in Japanese and want not just an audience but money for systematised material: the sales mechanics are described by contract, the fees are named as numbers and the withdrawal threshold is low. It suits Japanese teams: Publication gives you a corporate blog inside a community, with an explicit position that the articles stay with the author.

It does not suit an English-speaking audience: the interface and the rules are in Japanese only. It does not suit product promotion — advertising as the main purpose of a publication is prohibited. It does not suit you if you need to withdraw funds outside the Japanese banking system: there is only one alternative to a transfer — an Amazon gift card.

Verified data

The checked data this deep dive rests on.

About the platform

the platform describes itself as follows: «Zennはエンジニアが技術・開発についての知見をシェアする場所です。本の販売や、読者からのバッジの受付により対価を受け取ることができます。»

Account and access

There is a limit on the number of posts within a period of time: «コンテンツの粗製乱造を防止する観点から、コンテンツの投稿数には一定時間あたりの上限数(レートリミット・レート制限)が設けられています» (verbatim; our translation: to prevent the mass production of shoddy content, a per-period ceiling — a rate limit — is set on the number of posts). The logic of the limit is not disclosed: «上限はさまざまな要素を組み合わせたロジックにより決定されます。このロジックは不正防止のため開示しておりません» (verbatim; our translation: the ceiling is determined by logic combining various factors; this logic is not disclosed, in order to prevent abuse). Articles, books and scraps have separate limits

Zenn nowhere ties the limit to account age — the rule is common to everyone; but it is exactly what a new author runs into. The FAQ text is delivered by client-side JS, and the page's official bundle at zenn.dev/faq/rate-limit was read

source, checked 2026-08-07

By waiting: «上限に達した場合でも、一定時間が経過すれば再び投稿できるようになります» (verbatim; our translation: even if the ceiling is reached, after some time has passed you will be able to post again). Separately, the limit can be temporarily raised on request: «他ブログサービスなどからZennにコンテンツを移行する場合、一時的に上限を緩和できます。お問い合わせフォームより申請してください» (verbatim; our translation: when migrating content to Zenn from another blogging service, the ceiling can be temporarily relaxed; please apply through the enquiry form)

Both conditions are named by the platform outright

source, checked 2026-08-07

The counting windows are named, but not the waiting period: «記事は直近24時間以内の投稿数(投稿予約中を含む)、本は直近1週間以内の投稿数に基づいて判定されます» (verbatim; our translation: articles are judged on the number of posts in the last 24 hours, including scheduled ones, and books on the number in the last week). How long to wait after the limit triggers is said only as «一定時間» — some time, with no figure

The counting window is named and the time until the limit lifts is not; nothing was invented to fill the gap

Affiliate links are not named directly. The rules prohibit publishing material whose main purpose is advertising or recruitment (広告または採用を主な目的としたコンテンツを投稿する行為, article 4).
