ویرگول (Virgool)
Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.
Overview
ویرگول (Virgool, "virgool" is Persian for "comma") is an Iranian platform for publishing texts in Farsi. Structurally it is closest to Medium: a feed of personal posts, subscriptions, recommendations, a reading time on each entry.
The platform describes itself like this: «در ویرگول همه میتونن بنویسن» — "on Virgool anyone can write"; the terms of use are more precise: a "private content publishing platform (Microblog)".
What matters for social media work is that the platform has a price list: the sale of advertising placements is moved to a separate subdomain with a cart and prices in tomans. The site owner is named in the footer: شرکت محتوا نگار پارسی خلاق.
Who's here
The platform gives its own audience measurement in commercial materials: "more than 2.5 million registered users and 7 million visits per month". The same visit figure is repeated on the sponsored post page: "7 million visitors monthly". These are the platform's own claims in copy that sells advertising, and they carry no dates.
The language is Farsi, and no other language versions are declared. The jurisdiction is named outright: Virgool's activity is subject to the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The mix of topics can be seen from the sections of the home page: games, cryptocurrencies, health, software engineering. The platform publishes no audience breakdown by country.
Getting started
Registration offers three ways in: by email address, through a Google account, and by mobile number with a confirmation code. The terms impose two requirements. First: a pseudonym is allowed, but the rest of the details supplied at registration must be genuine. Second, important for agencies: each person may have only one personal account. Leaving is described too: at any moment you can delete any post or deactivate the whole account.
A corporate presence is arranged through «انتشارات» (entesharat, "publications") — group blogs inside the platform. Anyone can create one: an account with a confirmed email is enough, then a name, a description and an image. Co-editors and authors are added in the control panel, and the platform warns that their number is limited in proportion to the number of articles.
What you can publish
The format is an article in an editor: two levels of headings, quotes, links, lists, plus a native code block, an embed for external blocks, and "inline code". There is an audio version of an article, and it comes with specifically Iranian requirements: the voice-over is meant only for reading the text out, and it must not contain anything at odds with the moral norms and customs of society, impermissible music, mockery of an accent or ethnicity, or insults to ethnic and religious minorities.
What is prohibited. The terms list quoting other people's material without naming the source, insulting other users, well-known figures, sacred things and the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran, publishing criminal content, infringing intellectual property rights, and collecting data and crawling the service.
There is also a strict rule about financial schemes: any material which, in the editors' opinion, introduces readers to financial and cryptocurrency pyramid schemes and scam services — or is even suspected of doing so — may be removed by the platform immediately and without warning. The exception is material that warns against them.
How to grow
The platform does not describe the mechanics of its feed. It does explain directly what happens to a post over time: on publication a post is shown to readers interested in the relevant topic, but as time passes and new posts appear its impressions fall. This is the only official statement about how reach is distributed.
Statistics. The help centre has a section «مشاهده آمار» (viewing statistics) with pages about the visit details for each post. The advertising page reveals what it contains: the daily and total number of visitors to a post, "the average read-through percentage of your content" and "the number of referrals from different platforms".
Paid promotion of your own posts — «بسته افزایش بازدید», the view-boost package; it is ordered in your account and, in the platform's words, gives you the chance to interact with new users across various topic sections. The platform names the side effect itself: a rise in the number of visitors speeds up indexing and improves the post's position in search.
Path to monetization
The platform does not pay authors: there is no revenue-sharing programme, no subscription to an author and no tips. The terms state the opposite: Virgool has the right to show advertising next to a user's content, and no share is promised to the author. Virgool does earn from companies, though, and here everything is published.
The sponsored post («رپورتاژ آگهی», reportaj-e agahi). Prices: one post — 4,200,000 tomans, discounted to 4,000,000; a package of 10 — 42,000,000, discounted to 35,000,000; a package of 25 — 105,000,000, discounted to 79,000,000 tomans. The platform names what is included with a number: each post may contain a maximum of 3 permanent follow links, you write the text yourself, and after payment the post goes out within 24 hours.
Packages of nofollow links. A separate product whose existence explains the platform's main technical property: links on Virgool are nofollow by default, and the packages are needed so that the advertising text is not removed by the spam detection system; one link — 490,000 tomans, 5 links — 2,450,000, discounted to 2,000,000, 10 links — 4,900,000, discounted to 3,900,000, 50 links — 24,500,000, discounted to 17,000,000 tomans.
Other formats — targeted banners, push notifications, a banner in the newsletter, «پرونده محتوایی» (a content dossier: invited authors write about the client's topic) and user-generated content campaigns. There are no prices for these; the platform invites you to write to the department's address: [email protected]. Payment is through a bank gateway with cards on the Shetab network, and prior registration in the shop is not required.
Tools and automation
The platform has no open API: neither a developer section nor documentation. What is more, the terms explicitly prohibit collecting and using data and published content, as well as crawling the service. Scheduling through third-party services is neither technically described here nor permitted by the rules.
Your own domain and publication settings. The main "tool" for a company is the ability to run a Virgool publication on your own domain and use it as your own blog. The publication control panel offers domain personalisation, template settings, defining a CTA (the platform notes separately that the link in this block is follow) and three links in the main menu. The template lets you add a banner, change the layout and list posts by tag, topic or popularity.
Rights to the content. The wording is unambiguous: the moral and property rights to your text on Virgool belong to you; by publishing a text you give Virgool permission to publish it. The platform promises never to sell your content and your data to third parties without your valid permission, but at the same time the user gives permission to use the content they have created to promote Virgool's own services, and deleted content may remain on the servers for some time. No standard archive export is described in the help centre.
Limits and rules
- One account per person. A direct provision of the terms.
- Spam and the penalty for it — with numbers. The platform counts as spam purely promotional or commercial material placed to build links and manipulate SEO; the penalty is a warning, then deactivation of the account for two weeks, then permanent deactivation. There is one legal route — buy an advertising package, so that the text is not removed by the spam detection system.
- Removal at the platform's discretion. Virgool has the right to stop showing user-created content or to delete it for reasons it determines itself.
- Liability and law. Legal liability for material rests with the user, the platform is not answerable for third-party hacking, changes to the terms are announced by email, and the activity is subject to the legislation of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Who it's for
It suits companies working in the Iranian market: the platform has a ready price list, a clear product (a sponsored post with three follow links), a corporate blog on your own domain, and statistics with a read-through percentage. It suits authors writing in Farsi who value that the rights to their texts stay with them and that publishing costs nothing.
It does not suit free promotion of services: the rules call that spam outright and punish it with deactivation. It does not suit automation — there is no API and crawling is prohibited. It does not suit an author as a source of income. And it does not suit topics sensitive to Iranian law: the ban on insulting the country's sacred things and laws is stated plainly, and the decision on whether it applies rests with the platform.
