Odysee

Platform · this deep dive is built from the official pages of the platform itself and of the tools that support it.

Overview

Odysee describes itself as a "blockchain media platform" that hosts images, articles, PDFs and audio files but is known above all for video; the same place says that the user needs no knowledge of blockchain.

The practical difference from the familiar video services lies in how the money works. Settlement goes not through an advertising dashboard but through a crypto wallet: the platform reports a move to blockchain payments and requires the Wander wallet with support for the AR (Arweave) token. Ranking is tied to money too: Trending shows the material with the biggest increase in tips and support over the last hours and days, and Top the one with the largest total for the period. The rights holder of the help centre is given as Odysee Holdings, Inc.

Who's here

There is no number of users, no views and no breakdown by country on the publicly accessible pages of the help centre. Any figures about Odysee you come across will have to be checked with their author separately.

An indirect indicator of geography is the language of the documentation. The help centre has six language versions: English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian. Russian is not among them.

Getting started

Registration is ordinary, by e-mail. What matters next is verification: the platform writes that it is not mandatory but is needed to receive some Credits, that most accounts pass it automatically, and that a manual check takes from a few hours to a few days. A manual review takes in, among other things, location and VPN use.

One account can have up to 5 channels, and synchronized channels are not counted towards this limit.

Migrating from YouTube

The YouTube Sync programme mirrors a channel in full — name, avatar, description and public videos with their titles, thumbnails and tags — and new posts are pulled in automatically; the platform emphasizes that there is no contract and no hidden obligations and you can leave at any moment. The requirements are strict: at least 50,000 channel views a month on YouTube and a public subscriber counter; videos 7 seconds long or shorter are not transferred, and videos over 2 GB are transferred at reduced quality. The volume of the transfer is tied to the subscriber count at the moment of connection: from 100 subscribers — 20 videos of up to 30 minutes each, from 1000 — 400 videos and up to 2 hours, from 10,000 — 1000 videos and up to 2 hours. The limit is fixed when you connect and does not grow with the channel by itself — increases are requested by e-mail.

What you can publish

Formats and sizes. Uploading is limited to 16 GB per file; video requires MP4 in H264/AAC, with a recommended bitrate below 8 Mbit/s; besides video, images, audio, PDFs and CAD files are accepted. If the bitrate is exceeded, the platform shows a warning and advises re-encoding, naming 1080p at 30 frames per second as the default preset.

Presentation. A video and a channel can carry no more than 5 tags, the thumbnail is recommended at 1280x720 or 1920x1080 pixels, and pornographic content must carry the Mature tag. The licence is chosen there as well: by default material is treated as protected by copyright, but you can choose the public domain or Creative Commons.

Live streams. There is no automatic publishing of a replay: the recording is posted manually from the Go Live page, and several recordings cannot be combined into one post. For a stream a thumbnail of 1280x720 pixels is recommended, and here too there are no more than 5 tags.

Prohibited. The community guidelines (updated 22 September 2025) name: spam, illegal activity and material infringing copyright, doxxing, inflating views, likes and subscribers, the sale of unlicensed medicines, the promotion of terrorism and criminal activity.

How to grow

Odysee has no description of a recommendation feed — it has three ways of sorting. New shows material by upload time, Trending — the material with the biggest increase in tips and support over the last hours and days, Top — the one with the largest total for a chosen period. Visibility here is driven by viewers' money, and the mechanism works in favour of those who already have a paying audience.

Tags are conceived as a search tool: the platform writes outright that they improve discoverability, and that stuffing keywords into the description is pointless — it does not affect search. There is no advertising dashboard on the publicly accessible pages of the help centre.

Path to monetization

Odysee does pay creators — but through a crypto wallet. Any receipts require creating or connecting a Wander wallet with AR support; it can be set up through a social network account or by e-mail. The ways of earning that the platform describes itself:

Commissions. The only published table is marked "2023 Odysee Payments Chart. Subject to change" and describes the former scheme via Stripe: a processing fee of 2.9 % plus 0.30 dollars, a platform commission of 5 % on tips, hyperchats and memberships and 25 % on the purchase and rental of videos. There is a contradiction here: the wallet section speaks of a completed move to blockchain payments, while the fee table is left over from the dollar scheme. The platform publishes no rates in force for settlement in AR. The former internal currency has been moved to the section "Legacy Monetization", which explains what holders of old Credits should do.

Tools and automation

Odysee does not describe a programmatic interface of its own on its help pages. Open documentation does exist for the protocol the platform is built on: LBRY publishes a list of the lbry-sdk daemon's methods and the specification, the blockchain API and a guide to building applications. That documentation belongs to the LBRY Foundation, not to Odysee, and it claims no compatibility with the platform's current version.

Among built-in tools the platform names publishing form templates that keep the settings of previous uploads, and carrying the stream key over between broadcasts so you do not have to change the settings in your streaming software each time.

Limits and rules

Who it's for

It suits you if you already have an audience ready to pay directly and you are comfortable settling in cryptocurrency: Trending and Top are counted by tips — the platform rewards not reach but paying viewers. It suits you as a second home for a YouTube channel: the transfer is automatic, with no contract and the option to leave at any moment, and the entry threshold of 50,000 views a month is attainable for an average channel.

It does not suit you if you need predictable income at published rates: the platform names no commissions in force for settlement in AR, and the only table is dated 2023. It does not suit you if a crypto wallet is an insurmountable barrier for you or your audience: without one, neither tips, nor memberships, nor video sales work. And it does not suit starting from zero: the platform describes no mechanism that would bring you your first viewers by itself.
